Behind the build
The problem, approach, and impact of Shopmate API.
- Type
- TypeScript E-commerce Backend API
- For
- Development teams building e-commerce products that need a reliable, typed backend foundation for users and commerce workflows.
01 Challenge
Ambiguous API errors and leaked implementation details make it harder for frontend teams to handle failures and maintain reliable user flows.
02 Approach
Built a TypeScript/Express API using Prisma and PostgreSQL, with authentication, validation, structured logging and centralized error handling.
03 Highlights
- Maps known Prisma failures to typed API errors and consistent response envelopes.
- Uses RS256 access and refresh tokens, Argon2 password hashing and Zod request validation.
- Models user, person, address and session data relationally and validates required environment configuration at startup.
04 Outcome
- Provides client applications with predictable validation, authentication and error-handling behavior.
- Improves backend maintainability and frontend integration through centralized error handling, typed responses and structured request validation.
